Poisoned drink kills more than 40

Poisoned illegal drink in the Indian state of Gujarat has killed more than 40 people and left many more seriously ill.

More than 20 people are receiving treatment in the capital Ahmedabad. The victims were reported to be labourers and regular drinkers.

The brew was made by adding ethyl alcohol to toddy - a local drink made from the sap of the coconut tree. The man who made the brew has also died after drinking it.

Police said the victims drank the liquor brewed in the house of Arvind Solanki, a resident of Behrampura, near the capital, on Sunday night.

One resident said: “Some customers who used to purchase regularly from him complained of a different taste. Thus, Arvind, his cousin Bhavan Solanki and son Pradeep also consumed it.

”Arvind and Bhavan were the first to succumb on Monday night.”

The deaths have sparked concerns in the area since several people have complained of a loss of vision, nausea, stomach ache and uneasiness.

”Patients have been streaming in since Tuesday morning,” a spokesman at a local hospital told the Times of India.

”We have put them on medication and have collected samples.”

The police have begun working on the case. “We are conducting raids on all probable placed from where hooch (spirit) was found,” a police official said.

”All victims died of heart attack. We are in touch with medical officials to control the situation.”

The sale and consumption of alcohol is prohibited in the state, but many residents brew and consume it illegally.
