'Take your bloody veil off'

A Muslim woman says she is scared to venture out after being ordered to take off her veil in a terrifying ordeal.

Kauser Bibi was in Oldham Town Centre when she says a man began following her and asking her to take off her veil.

"I had just been to the Halifax bank when this guy started shouting 'Oi' at me. I just carried on walking and ignored him at first. Lots of people were there watching and no-one seemed to notice what was going on.

"He followed me and started shouting at me. I walked towards my car but then things got ugly.

"He kept saying Take your bloody veil off - I want to see your face'. He stood in front of my car and then when I tried to reverse started kicking my car. He was really kicking the car door really hard."

"He was abusing me and saying all sorts of other things.

"I was crying and was so upset and panicked. I didn't know what to do.

Kauser of Blackburn who was in Oldham visiting her relatives says that passers-by then intervened and tried to pull him away but he wouldn't listen to them.

"I called the police from my phone but even when they arrived he still kept saying, 'I want her to take off her veil.' "I was still crying and in shock when I got to the police station.

"I am so glad my car was near by. I dread to think what would have happened if my car was parked further away."

"I go out everywhere and this is the first time anything like this has happened to me."

Her sister-in-law Ruksana Calisir said Kauser didn't even tell her family about the incident until days later.

"I was so angry when I heard about it. She seemed to think there some sort of Baystee in telling us.

"She is a very strong person and nothing seems to bother her but this incident has left in total shock.

"She is absolutely petrified and doesn't want to go out at all now. She is such a good and kind-hearted person I am absolutely disgusted someone would put her through this.

"People need to know that incidents like these take place and if they are not reported then people will get away with it."

Police said a 50-year-old man from Oldham was arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated damage to a vehicle and was bailed, pending further inquiries.

This nation should allow freedom of expression. The man was wrong to forcibly get the woman to remove the veil.
The veil (niqab and/or burqa) is an outdated concept. It belongs to a bygone age in a different culture when women were supposed to stay at home and were suppressed. Imams are spineless to do Ijtehaad (derive laws and inter/extrapolate from Quran and Sunnah)to outlaw the nicab/burqa and so we are left with spineless views like "she can wear it if she wants". By wearing a nicab/burqa it's not herself who is affected but society as a whole.
But actions like that described above will only serve to create a negative reaction thus making the case stronger for nicab/burqa to be worn. It needs a sea change from ulema. Revive Ijtehaad or Islam will become a set of rules and regulations confined to the middle ages.

chaz76 from Manchester I think you totally lost the point!

Forcing someone to remove their veil (legally or otherwise) is just as bad as forcing someone to wear a veil! In both cases the liberty of choice is removed.

Harrassment is illegal. This man is a criminal. Also, if we allow people to walk around practically naked then why should we also not allow them to walk around covered? She can wear a bin bag if she wants to - her choice.

defeal, you didn't read my comment properly. You'll find I said it was wrong to forcibly remove the veil. Due to intransigence of Islamic clergy over the centuries we have got to the indecisive mess we have now with regards to veil or not to veil. An analogy can be drawn - yes you can wear a short skirt in this country and you have to accept the leching that goes with it, the stares and the wolf whistles by perverts. In the same way you can wear a veil in this county put you will have to put up with the stares and occasional remarks.

chaz76,

with yoor "reason" wearing trousers should be banned too. They are also affecting society as a whole.

Do you got more funny logic?

There are some reasonable arguments supporting veil to be illegal. Faces are like number plates. If you hide it, you would easier get away with breaking the laws.

All though it's reasonable, I doubt it should be weighted more than freedom of speech, where your clothing is a language.

Getting rid of muslims' veils can only be done by getting rid of islam.

Focus on the sickness and stop treating the symptoms!

Ok, but the British airways forcibally tells Christian women to take their crosses off in order not to offend others. I am pretty sure that is the same concept. The man was not necessarily racist!

Folks,

Don't forget that 6+ months ago, a wanted male criminal fled the UK by wearing an hijab, and the stupid customs officer "respected" the "ladies" decision to wear an hijab. With all the PC in the UK these days, any official who asks someone to remove an hijab (Jack Straw excepted) will be mercilessly berated.

One good way to demonstrate the stupidity of allowing widespread wearing of hijabs, would be for 100 large males to assemble together, all of them wearing hijabs!! One or two of them can openly commit some grievious crimes, and then effortlessly merge back into the 100 strong crowd hijabs. Hey!!! The police cannot arrest 100 people, and if they did, you just sue them for false arrest. It would be so funny, because society would become so lawless if everyone was allowed to wear hijabs.

If you choose to live in this country then you must live as we do. Why people come here and think they can carry on their 3rd world habits I don't know! Of course the guy was wrong to harass her and kick her car, but I sympathise with his attitude. If veil-wearing isn't stamped on how long before all women HAVE to wear veils just because some think it's a religious requiremment - which it isn't, not in the koran at all!

So al lthe brits who moved to australia dressl iek aborigines do they, or what about spain, how come all brits walk round with tacky football shirts and name all the bars after the ones here. i hope they make an example of this guy and lock him up. Wear what you want, its her body not yours. Now go get a shower as i find smelly people more offensive than pure niqab wearing women.

First to all those apologetic and ill informed muslims who have a very basic and sometimes non existent knowledge and understanding of deen, please get your facts right.
Chaz if you are a muslim you need to check with a mufti if you need to say the shahada again. The quran and the sunnah clearly and un ambigiously state that wearing a veil is obligatory. If someone chooses not too that is between them and their creator. If the quran was in th middle ages why is it that what the quran said 1400 years ago is just being proven now by science. Take the human embryo or the bees. As for living here like the hosts. You have no room to talk. Look at the history books and for contempoary examples 'jamils' comments. Wherever the brits went in their conquered 'british empire' they imposed their way of life.

I was saying that you are allowed to wear whatever you like in this country. Whether you choose to wear much less or much more brings a set of reactions consequences which the law cannot always protect you from.
Overzealous interpretation of the Quran and Sunnah has led us into a state where we are now. This proves more why Ijtehaad should return in its fullness. I have suppressed a fuller response since this forum is frequented by non Muslims and disruptive elements.

Look one of our sisters was abused. Chaz76, while you correctly say it was wrong for her to be attacked this is the wrong stage for this nicab debate. I come from a religious family and all my female sisters, cousins and aunts wear hijab but not the nicab (veil). This debate on nicab has been going on in Islam for years. H of Bolton your language is extreme and you are alienating nearly all of muslim women including those who are practising.

Why do people get so offended by veil?

Its the peoples choice what they want to wear. Muslims have modesty they dont go round with shorts and skirts; is that why you get so angry?

Burnley Resident, Burnley says...

I think she should be able to wear what she wants.

I have seen people wear literally almost everything in the UK,From Superman costumes to only a vest and shorts, but for some reasons, even our own Muslims, think the veil should not be worn?

If they want to wear it, let them wear it.
I mean whats it to do with us !?

I dont like it when i see these young girls walking around town hardly dressed but people do not pass comment on their appearance, so why should this be any different, just let people get on with their lives and dress how they want to dress.

Britain invaded Afghanistan and killed millions of people to impose the British way of life on Muslims.
If the British invade nations to force British values on others what makes anyone think the Bush’s pet regime here will give people the right to follow Islamic values here.
Freedom is hypocrisy, simple as that.

It is not right but then I know for a fact if a British woman came to saudi arabia wearing no head scarf and a short skirt she would be in for big big trouble.
