The Ultimate Mela Guide - North West

We’ve got all the dates all in one place and if for some reason there’s one missing it’s because the organisers were too slow off the mark.

From the thumping beats of Manchester to Oldham’s finest here’s the definitive Asian Image Ultimate Mela Guide.

>> Bradford Mela, Sat 13 & Sun14 June 2009, Peel Park, Bradford We begin as always in the heart of mela country. Isn’t it wonderful what working without a committee can do.

Now in its 21st year 2009 will be a big year for Bradford Mela. Organisers promise it will to be an extra-special celebration, with specially commissioned work and collaborations, new performance areas, more workshops to watch and take part in, a new look children’s zone, and of course the best in local and international entertainment.

Biggies this year...Jaz Dhami...Jazzy B..Veronica & Mumzy and RDB (Sunday).

bradfordmela.org.uk >> Preston Mela, Sun 14 June, Avenham Park.

We are glad this mela made a comeback last year and they were rewarded with a decent enough crowd.

What is great about this little festival is how it manages to attract a wide range of people. Expect more of the same with a full programme of performances by professional artists, a number of interactive craft, dance and music workshops, fashion shows, craft activities and food stalls.

>> Celebrate Blackburn- Various venues - Throughout July.

Loads of little events in different places rather than one big bash we all want. But there are few highlights which might just win our trust back. Fashionasian takes place on August 1. There is a night of Anglo – asian comedy on July 17 and the community dance day on July 18 is always fun. But barring that you can go on Blackburn historical bus tours and the Leeds and Liverpool canal tours.

>> B4U Oldham Mela, Alexandra Park, Sun July 12 Expect big things from the guys and gals in Oldham this year. They put on a bit of a show last year and are hoping to repeat it with the likes of...Ha Dhami, Veronica, Bonafide, Nasir Khan, Mumzy, Fly Entertainment.

>> Rochdale Mela, Sunday 19 July, Venue to be confirmed.

Come on Rochdale Council let them hold the meal where they normally hold it.

Traditional as they come this lot and how melas are supposed to be. Short, sharp, some bands and top quality stalls. What else do you honestly want from a mela? >> Bolton Mela Mela Sunday 9 August, Haslam Park. Every we have eben to the Bolton Mela we have been pleasantly surprised. Okay, it's no London but these guys actually try to give us a mela rather than fob us off with second rate acts. And when it rains they kindly move the mela indoors (they did this two years yars ago!)...talk about putting the customer first.

>> Rossendale Mela - Sun 9 August - New Hall Hey- Cricket Ground - Rawtenstall.

Live music throughout the afternoon, arts and crafts marquees, fairground and food concessions. Small but perfectly formed!

>> Hyndburn Mela and Community Festival Sun 16 August Oakhill Park, Accrington.

Live music throughout the afternoon, arts and crafts marquees, fairground and food concessions.. Lots to do for all the family!.

Leeds Mela: Normally held in July this was scrapped last year after a lack of sponsorship, organisers said.
