Bhangra group Nachdha Panjab are gearing up for a performance at Bradford’s Mela this weekend.
The team was revived last year by young members of the family that originally formed the group in the 1980s.
It will combine a traditional northern Indian form of bhangra dancing with a more modern UK version. The Mela takes place on Saturday and Sunday at Peel Park, and this year’s event is the 21st.
Bradford Mela was the first of its kind in Europe and has grown each year with more than 100,000 visiting over two days. Each year there is a mix of performers, street artists, market stalls and food. This year sees specially-created artworks and a new children and family zone.
Nachdha Panjab will be appearing on the Sunday. In addition the Mela will screen the multi-Oscar winning film Slumdog Millionaire in a cinema.
The Bradford City of Film project and Fabric, Bradford’s arts development organisation, will present the movie as part of a film programme in the City of Film Cinema. It is the first time that film has been a major part of the Mela.
Slumdog Millionaire will be screened alongside a programme of films made by Bradford film-makers some of which received their first showing earlier this month at Bradford Playhouse.
Six of the films were commissioned by Bradford City of Film as part of the Made in Bradford short film competition. The film-makers were given a budget of £1,000 and just six weeks to cast, shoot and edit their films.
Fabric’s director Gideon Seymour said: “By showing films by Bradford filmmakers alongside Slumdog Millionaire we hope to show that there will be more film making talent coming out of Bradford to follow Keighley’s Simon Beaufoy, the Oscar winning scriptwriter of Slumdog.”
Nigel Rice, project manager of City of Film, said “The City of Film Cinema at the Mela is an important part of our plan to make film part of the district’s cultural landscape and attract and develop film making and film makers to the district.”
