A 13-year-old Sale Grammar School pupil was announced runner-up in the Greater Manchester Student Awards.
Surabhi Desai was runner up in the science and ICT category of this year’s event, which aim to celebrate achievement and reward the next generation of writers, scientists, artists and musicians throughout the region’s secondary schools.
Surabhi was congratulated on her success by Coronation Street star, Ben Thompson and Greater Manchester Challenge Chief Advisor, Mel Ainscow, at the awards night held at the Imperial War Museum North The competition, which forms part of the Greater Manchester City Challenge campaign, was open to all students across Greater Manchester in Years 9 and 10 and covered five categories – art and design, music, drama, creative writing, science and ICT.
This year’s awards had the theme: ‘My School, My City and Me’ and in the science and ICT category, students were asked to develop an idea that demonstrates how they could make their school a ‘greener’ place to be.
For her entry, Surabhi conducted some insightful research and made a plan of how to make Sale Grammar more environmentally friendly.
“After having a look around the school, I found a number of ways in which we could save energy,” she said. “There are some simple ways in which this could done. If these small steps were taken by all schools in the UK, we would reduce our energy wastage significantly.”Other Trafford finalists included Anya Patel for her music entry and Abdullah Ali for his science and ICT entry, both from Sale Grammar School.
