Wasim gets top marks at college

A star pupil has reason to celebrate after he managed to 'ace' his A Levels and get the highest marks at Blackburn College.

The College’s highest achiever said: “I’m amazed and shocked and incredibly proud of myself.

“The subjects I studied weren’t exactly easy and required a lot of time and effort, but I’m so glad I put the hours in, it’s definitely been worth it.”

After leaving Pleckgate High school at 16, Wasim joined St. Mary’s College but decided to transfer to Blackburn College to resit five GCSE’s and complete his AS Levels.

“Studying at Blackburn College has been such a great opportunity; it’s a mature environment and not as regimented and formal as other institutions.

“One thing that really appealed to me was the relationship between students and teachers, you get treated like real adults and it’s such a friendly atmosphere,” said Wasim.

From studying Government and Politics, Wasim has benefited from a variety of international educational trips to compliment his studies, including trips to Berlin, Poland and Auschwitz.

Proving he is an all-round player, Wasim was also the editor of the Sixth Form Centre’s Student Newsletter, ‘News at Sixth.’ At this stage Wasim is undecided as to which University he will be attending in September, it will either be Lancaster University to read Politics or Middle Eastern Studies at Manchester University.

One thing is for sure, whichever degree he decides to go for, either one will put him in good stead for his dream career as a diplomat.

Wasim was one of 365 students who sat their A Levels at the College who had a record overall pass rate of 99.7% and 100% success in 28 out of 29 subjects. The College also beat the national average pass rate of 97.5%.

Wendy Simms, Head of Sixth Form, said: “I would like to congratulate all our students; their results are exceptional and, as always, they are a credit to the College.

“The results reflect the hard work and commitment of our students and the high quality of teaching and learning at Blackburn College.

“All the students have played an important part in gaining these fantastic pass rates and I thank them, their lecturers and parents for their hard work and support.”

The College is undergoing major transformation and expansion, with the new state-of-the-art £14m University Centre opening its doors this September.

Ian Clinton, Principal, said: “I am delighted that this year’s results have exceeded our previous best; everyone must be congratulated on their tremendous achievements.

“These results have topped off a string of outstanding successes for the college, including one of the best ever Ofsted inspection reports for a college in the UK, a Government Beacon Award for excellence in teaching and learning, and the Investors in People award.

“With 500 extra places available now at our new University Centre, these students can continue their academic journey with us and build on these successes.”
