Manchester is one of the best cities in the country to be a student, research has revealed.
Northern cities in general, including Sheffield, Newcastle, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Aberdeen shared top honours, according to an analysis of 38,000 reviews on the website accommodationforstudents.com.
Undergraduates were asked to rate their university location based on five points, going out (restaurants, pubs and clubs), shops, transport links, community (safety, student population and surroundings) and facilities (gyms, libraries and parks).
The seven northern cities in the top 10 all had an overall score of 62%. The only southern cities to equal the mark were Exeter and Brighton.
Oxford scored a respectable 60%, while Cambridge notched up 56%.
The lowest scoring towns were Pontypridd in south-east Wales, and Salford, which were each given 44%.
The results were collected to mark a revamp of the website, which has 1.8 million registered users.
Simon Thompson, co-founder and director of accommodationforstudents.com, said: “Our website gives students real added value in terms of useful information.
”Not only does it have the biggest database of properties and landlords, making it the easiest option for finding new accommodation, but it is packed with other useful information and guides, like the student reviews.”
