Fosis conference in Salford

Over 500 Muslim students have gathered at the University of Salford for the national conference of FOSIS - the Federation of Student Islamic Societies.

As well as hearing speakers from across the world, the delegates, who represent university Islamic societies across the country will also hear a recorded address by Higher Education Minister Bill Rammell and a speech by the President of the National Union of Students, Wes Streeting.

Bill Rammell will be speaking to the students about the issues faced by Muslims in higher education, including extremism on campus and the challenge of getting more Islamic young people to come to University.

Faisal Hanjra from FOSIS said: "We're delighted to have input from Bill Rammell who came to our conference last year. There are many areas of Government policy - particularly in education - which our members are interested in, so we're keen to establish a closer relationship with the Minister and hear what he has to say."

Debates also feature prominent speakers from countries such as Iraq, the USA and Kuwait, as well as UK-based experts on issues such as community cohesion and theology.

Usman Ali of Salford's Students' Union is head of the University's Islamic Society. He said: "Having the FOSIS conference here at Salford is a major coup for us. We have a large number of Muslim students here at the University and to have FOSIS on campus is a real boost for them."
