Digi-box raids set to continue
Virgin Media have continued their clampdown on the illegal use and modification of digital TV set- top boxes.
Five men and one woman were arrested by police after a series of co-ordinated raids. And it has been revealed 200 digi-boxes were seized during the raids.
Virgin Media said they will continue to target those using boxes fraudulently.
Malcolm Davies, Virgin Media's head of fraud and security said: "This should act as a serious warning to others to steer clear of this type of crime.
"We take this matter extremely seriously and will continue to work closely with all the police forces throughout the UK to prosecute individuals connected with this type of TV fraud."
Over 40 officers were deployed in early morning raids as part of a joint investigation between Lancashire Constabulary and Virgin Media.
Police raided three houses, one on Livingstone Road and two on Assheton Road and an industrial unit on Hamilton Street, Blackburn.
A house on Duchy St in Preston was also targeted.
Thorough searches of all properties were carried out and the suspects questioned on suspicion of committing offences under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988. They have now been bailed pending further enquiries.
Neighbourhood Policing Sgt Colin Dassow said, "This operation demonstrates our commitment to taking firm action against anyone suspected of illegally benefiting from the proceeds of crime and we will continue to work with organisations such as Virgin Media in the future.
"Members of the public should be reminded that using set-top boxes that have been illegally modified to receive digital TV subscription channels are committing a criminal offence.
Anyone receiving these channels and making no payment to the respective media company is at risk of being prosecuted."
Anyone with information or concerns is urged to contact police on 0845 125 35 45 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
Alternatively contact the Virgin media fraud security line on freephone 0800 096 7800.
