A new rule where police officers will be permitted to wear shalwar kameez as part of their uniforms has been welcomed by new recruits.

The news comes on the back of a recent announcement that Islamic law is to be enshrined in the British legal system for the first time under guidelines for solicitors.

It is hoped that the new dress rule will mean more Asians will join police forces across the UK in greater numbers.

The pilot scheme is to be introduced in Luton and Bradford later in the year.

Anees Haris said he had always wanted to join the police force but had been put off by the uniform, “I thought about joining the police when I left college but I just hated the trousers and shirt. "The new shalwar kameez rule is something that will certainly be more appeal to me. It is just far more comfortable - especially in the summer."

Other proposals such as customary moustaches, torture to extract statements and commission based bribes have been shelved.
