12:00pm Saturday 19th November 2011 in Dear Massi By Massi
Dear Massi I love my husband but he has become obsessed with haram and halal.
We follow all his orders concerning what is halal and haram but in the past few months it is making all our lives a misery.
We have four children in their teens and if he doesn’t want them to go anywhere or buy anything he says it is haram.
I’m not sure who is telling him these things.
My daughter wanted a phone and he said it was haram. Every food has to be inspected even if it from a reputable shop we have been going to for years.
He questions all halal shops even those that are HMC certified.
We can’t eat anywhere or shop anywhere because everything is haram. What am I to do?
We all understand the importance of these things but what can we do? B.
Massi Says, It sounds as though your husband has become a little obsessive with the idea of halal/haram and needs to be re-educated about this.
It is good to question whether things are halal or haram if this is part of your religion but then to question HMC certified shops who have to go through a strict process to get that certification is taking things a little too far.
Certainly it looks like he is using it as an excuse to do as he pleases.
I have no doubt that he has a mobile phone or a phone of some description then how possibly can it be haram for your daughter to have a mobile!
I would encourage your husband to speak with the local imam about the whole concept of halal and haram as he seems to be using this to control what the family have and do.
A little knowledge can be a dangerous thing if it is not tempered with actual fact.
There are lots of publications out there and online about the ideology behind halal and haram so it may be useful to direct him towards this.
Get someone whom he trusts to have a conversation about this with him and it wouldn’t be a bad idea to have a family discussion about how this is making you all feel and the fact that he is becoming oppressive in his thinking and that you guys feel it needs to change.
All the very best of luck
