Our son is seeing someone we know

Dear Massi, We have never interfered in our children’s private lives but I have found out my son is seeing a girl in our neighbourhood.

This has shocked me but I am willing to overlook this but I don’t think his father will.

He has told me what is going on I have told him it is haram but he won’t listen. His father is a lot more strict and may get very angry. He is well known in the community and so is the girl’s family. I am very upset by this and cannot sleep at night.

My daughters are worried for my health. I just think when people find out this is going to make our lives miserable.

Massi Says, Thanks for writing in and I can say with some assurance that you will not be alone in being a parent who is dealing with this type of issue in relation to their child.

Unfortunately this is a very difficult situation and cannot be resolved with ease as if you keep telling him he is wrong and what he is doing is haram he will dig his heels in and continue to dos s he wants.

I can understand your worries about his father finding out as this is sure to cause much more tension and may well create more problems.

There is no quick fix to this situation and you may not wish to hear this but there may be little you can do to change things as your son seems to want to continue doing what he wants.

You have told him how you feel about this and how it will impact your family and how it affects you. You may need to leave him to it and allow him to think about how much his relationship will affect the rest of the family.

Unfortunately you may not be able to do any more. He knows how you feel about it all and this will eventually come out you will need to be prepared for all the talk from other people who can be cruel.

You need to take care of yourself as letting this affect your health will not help matters.

Your son will need you and now he knows that you know this may slowly change his thoughts on what he is doing. I wish you the best of luck.
