My husband is so rude to me in public

Dear Massi, My husband is rude to me in front of people.

I have told him it is not right but he raises his voice and when we have guests speaks down to me.

My friends hate him and so do my sisters. Things got a little heated recently and I shouted at him in front of people and he said that if it happens again then he will divorce me. I don’t want to leave him as we have three children. I went against my family’s wishes to get married to him and my father suffered greatly when I got married to him.

Massi says, You should not have to put up with a bully and that is exactly what your husband is. How dare he shout at you and be affronted when you get to the point that you shouted back. He clearly didn’t like to be shouted at in front of people well now he knows what you feel like. The audacity of the man to then threaten you with divorce; what if you threatened him with divorce every time he made you feel awful and shouted at you?

You need to have a serious chat with him about how this makes you feel and that he is humiliating you in front of your friends and family also making him look bad. He cannot threaten you with divorce and expect you to just sit back and say nothing because if you let him get away with this then he will threaten you with divorce over other things as well. It is not right or fair that he should treat you like this and just because you married him against your family’s wishes doesn’t mean that you have to put up with anything that he throws your way. You must address this now as it will only get worse and you need to think about the impact of this on your children as they are watching their mother being bullied regularly and will think that this is normal behaviour between adults and may well use this as a blueprint for their own future relationships.
