Dear Massi, I've been a little unwell recently and had to go on antibiotics. It's only a cold though.

As soon as my mother-in-law saw my husband sneeze once, she told me to sleep on the floor so I don't infect my husband in my sleep.

I can't even tell her how illogical that is because she just makes my life difficult if I argue or disagree with her.

My husband doesn't want an argument to start so he said to put the spare mattress out at night so it looks like I'm listening to his mum, but then to sleep in the bed once our bedroom is locked.

We all live together so it's making my life so difficult.

She's even making me wash my dishes and cutlery in a separate sink and won't let me touch the kitchen towel.

How do I keep my mouth shut without driving myself crazy?

Massi says, There does appear to be a rather obsessive streak in your mother-in-law.

She doesn't not seem to be acting out of malice, but more so out of a compulsion to avoid getting ill herself.

Your husband has been very diplomatic in his advice to you.

It seems he is aware of his mother's difficult traits, hence his steps to avoid an argument.

Your husband is being understanding and supportive of you.

Try not to let your mother-in-law upset you. Challenging her outlook is unlikely to alter her stance.
