Dear Massi, I only got married two months ago, so this will be my first Eid with my in-laws.

My mother-in-law gave me my Eid present, a shalwar kameez and a gold set.

The shalwar kameez is way too big and has sweat prints on the underarm area.

The elastic in the kameez is really tatty.

And the gold set was given to my sister-in-law by her mother-in-law.

I remember it clearly as she showed it to me saying how much she hated it.

Why is my mother-in-law even bothering to give me a present if it's old and damaged?

I'd rather get nothing at all.

I can't tell my mum as she will be disgusted and it will create an issue between the families.

I am expected to wear the clothes and jewellery on Eid.

How do I get out of it?

PO

Massi Says, Whilst the end result is not so positive, remember that your mother-in-law's intention was to give you a present.

For that reason, it would be polite to be gracious and accept the gift.

To avoid wearing the outfit on Eid, you can tell your mother-in-law that you will have to get the outfit adjusted before wearing it as it is not your size.

Instead you could then wear a different outfit.

Alternatively, wearing the outfit just for the one day on Eid would be a magnanimous gesture from you and would prevent any issues relating to the outfit.
