I get stopped on the street almost daily by people who say the biggest problem with some people in the community is we don’t want anyone to succeed.
There is an age old analogy that as soon as one person tries to climb out of a hole there will be three or four trying to pull him back in.
Rather than working together we just don’t want anyone else to get the credit for something that we feel we deserve.
Now, I tended to think that this was something our elders said when they spoke of Pakistan, India or Bangladesh. If someone becomes successful or buys something new we have this idea that he must have got it by some illegal way.
Yes, there have been cases where people have done the dirty and been caught out in a big way.
But should we really be questioning other people’s lives without taking a long hard look at own? If something bad happens we automatically jump to conclusions. People say that women gossip. I think this is rubbish - I can tell you one thing - men talk more and make up bigger and more elaborate lies!
In addition to this over the years I have seen a fair few organisations come and go each opened by people who essentially wanted the same thing but wanted to get it own way.
If one guy didn’t become a chairman then he went and opened his own organisation. This went on and on and in the end the whole community suffered. It is how children behave.
This same example can be used with some of local businesses.
One person opens a takeway and soon enough someone else opens one up down the road. And it goes on until each business is making next to nothing and the only thing that keeps them going is pride.
In the tough financial times this has become major bone of contention in some areas where cut throat competition is driving people to extreme measures to stay open.
I think we need to realise that the only way we can achieve anything is by working together and not letting petty disputes get in the way of the bigger picture.
