Mobile phones could be used by Islamic extremists in prisons? The very thought of it had me calling for help.
The Conservative Party seem to have learnt quite a lot from the American election campaigns of recent years. When there is an international crisis - have something prepared to milk the publicity.
Or rather when there is a security related issue involving some nut with a Muslim name who wants to blow something up - try to link it in some way to a set of figures.
For instance, today, Tory security spokeswoman Baroness Neville-Jones quoted official Justice Ministry figures which show that more mobile phones and SIM cards than ever are being secretly brought into jails, despite a ban on their use.
Some 8,099 phones and SIM cards were confiscated in prisons in England and Wales in 2008 - a rise of more than 350% since 2006 - said Lady Neville-Jones Now, of course the link is everything. And the link here involves our friends at the Quilliam Foundation who were quick to highlight the dangers of mobile phone use by extremists in jails.
Okay, let me get this straight. Abu Hamza and his cronies are making use of mobile phones and spreading their evil ideology to the masses. This needs to stop. This is really serious as this could…wait for it…"threaten national security."
What on earth are they doing with i-phones in prison?
As a concerned member of the public I would like to know how these phones are getting in and how only the Islamic extremists are getting hold of them.
Oh…hold on...it's not just the Islamic extremists who have them. In fact the report relates to all prisoners. It just so happens we had a guy try to blow up a plane over the weekend and for the past few days all I can think of is Islamic extremism, Taliban crazies and powder being strapped to my underpants. And I was having such a stress-free Christmas.
So, what better way to really scare the pants off me than making me think even those we have locked-up are still able to get to us!
The fact of the matter is anyone and anyone could get hold of a mobile phone in prison and it could be used for anything. Strange…that doesn't sound half as menacing as my first sentence?
