A little Christmas never hurt anyone

My Lord every year the cards and lights come out earlier and earlier!

How am I meant to protect my children’s faith and culture in a society that is repeatedly ramming their religious beliefs down our throats?

I have even considered getting the kids to wear a blind fold and ear muffs.

But alas, I am simply using the lowest form of wit to describe the reaction SOME people are displaying to the celebrations’ goings on.

Hey, don't say it is all made up. I've seen and heard it myself.

Allow me to quote: “A true Muslim, indeed one who preaches the doctrines of Islam, may also be a faithful servant of a non-Muslim state, contributing loyally to its moral and economic well-being, involving himself in the state organization at the highest level and scrupulously observing its laws.”

Nowhere in this exert does it say “thou should not participate in viewing fireworks neither should they wish anyone a ‘merry Christmas’!”.

Last week I was driving along Whalley Range, Blackburn when I spotted the trees at the foot of the Bazaar sign have been decorated with lights, dare I say Christmas lights! Yippee we have Xmas lights on Whalley Range!

No they are Eid lights I was told (In case someone says we are not allowed to have Christmas lights!) My mum told me in the sixties they had English neighbours who would give them Christmas presents and guess what, not only did they accept them gracefully they reciprocated!

Does that make my parents Christian, or the children that consumed the chocolate non-believers? Sound ridiculous?

The question I have is why do some of us get so worked up these things? Surely our faith is solid; it runs through every vein in our body.

We live, breath and eat Islam. I can understand that some will say that we are wrongly partaking in a Christian celebration, my English friends always wish me a ‘happy Eid’.

I am trying to say is this really so detrimental in the scheme of things?

I will apologise in advance to those Muslims who are reading this piece and feel I have tarred everyone with the same brush.

I, for one don’t have a problem with my daughter taking part in a nativity play , in fact when she was chosen to play Mary I was jumping for joy! (Not literally, I can’t do that anymore!) Let’s not forget we as Muslims have the utmost respect for ‘Mariam’.

Anyway if this fails... there is the Next Sale. That is bound to unite us all!
