Some products and utensils are indispensable and are commonly found in Asian stores. Here are thirteen of the best...
Tawah
This large pan is used to make rotees (chapatis) and parathas and separates the men from the…well, the real men.
Chimta
Before we could find where to buy these, some of us would use old wire coat hangers and fashion them into this. We have known households come to a standstill when this goes missing. For those not in the know this is what one uses to flip the chapati with.
Lota
The quintessentially most Asian product if ever there was one. So much so that we certainly do believe that in the afterlife there will indeed be lotas. Comes in a range of colours and styles – blue is clearly the best though.
Colourful jugs
Now, not all of us are Lota users - some of us prefer the jug. The jug is not just used to clean the hard to reach places. It is still used by those who prefer the bucket and jug method when bathing.
Doi
Or in other words the perfectly formed ladle which is used to cook and then serve the perfectly cooked curry dish.
Atta maker
Oh come on! Who on earth would want to use this product? Doesn’t your daughter-in-law know how to gund (kneed) the flour? The atta maker is a highly sought after product these days due to the dying art of chapati making amongst the British Asian women (Okay, that was just cruel..)
Grinder
Not the website. But this wonderful thing that helps you grind herbs and spices. Only to be used by those who really know how to cook and not amateurs trying to make themselves look good in front of the in-laws.
Metal Ladle
Ever thought how that perfect Asian style dessert was poured? Well, now you know. We use this and we need it.
Asian style broom
And you thought that we could only use this in the yard back in the village? Still on sale and still being sold to those households who want to clean the expensive laminate floor properly.
Handis (pots) this size
When you have to serve fifty then you need something that can cook for a big crowd. These steel pots can be a life saver and we all know too well that the bigger the handis, the bigger the ego.
Chabnah
Used to serve chapatis and naans and keep them piping hot wrapped in a tea towel. If anyone knows the English name to this please let us know.
A Ceramic pot like this
If you want to cook the best lamb dish ever then you need to get yourself one of these. Still used in some households.
Asian Style tea set
There is nothing like being served tea in a set like this. Comes in all sorts of flowers and colours. No it doesn’t actually…pink it is then.
