I often get asked how I stay motivated, strong minded and maintain my healthy eating regime without caving into the dreaded sugar cravings.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is all about keeping FIT and having a BALANCED diet.

Eating a healthy, balanced diet is an important part of maintaining good health and can help you lose weight if that is what your goal is.

This means eating a wide variety of foods from all food groups (fruits & vegetables, dairy, protein, carbohydrates, fats & sugars) in the right proportions, and consuming the right amount of food and drink to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight.
Sometimes you just want something sweet….OK, you NEED something sweet and the craving can be pretty hard to resist.

In recent years, many articles in both scientific journals and the press have promoted the idea that people can become addicted to sugar in the same way that they can become addicted to drugs.

Although there isn’t enough evidence to back this up, excessive sugar in a diet can be very harmful and damaging to the human body.

Here are my top tips to curb/replace the sugar cravings; they worked for me so hopefully they will work for you too.

1. Fill up on your veggies and protein so that you have little room for the sugar! I eat more now than I did before I started on my journey but I eat more of the good stuff.

2. Give in a little! Eat a little bit of what you’re craving, enjoying a little bit of what you love may help you get rid of the feeling that you have been totally deprived.

3. Keep a piece of fruit with you wherever you go! Fruit is full of natural sugar and can help get rid of those cravings. Dried fruit is also a great alternative to the sugary pick and mix option.

4. Eat regularly – waiting for too long in between meals may set of those cravings for fatty/sugary foods. I eat about 5-6 times a day, breakfast/lunch/dinner and snacks in between.

5. Protein shakes and zero calorie flavoured drops/sauces are a great way to help with the cravings. I have a MYPROTEIN diet whey chocolate shake when I feel like I’m about to give in and use MYPROTEIN flavdrops to add a little sweetness to fruit/yoghurt/oats/frozen grapes.

Although NONE of these work for me when a Gulab Jamun is in the vicinity, they have worked for the majority of my weight loss journey.

It may take time to get a handle on your sugar cravings, changes in lifestyle don’t happen overnight.

Go easy on yourself, believe in yourself and FIGHT the cravings like the fighter that you are.
