With winter and the emergence of cold weather, the practicalities of wearing a jacket over an abaya was turned into a religious debate on Twitter.

The hashtag, “Yes for jackets over the abaya" trended on Saudi social media.

Many comments took a misogynistic tone with several men arguing against wearing a jacket over the Islamic garment.

One Twitter user wrote, "No, things are getting out of hand. Today, it's wearing the jacket over the abaya, tomorrow they won't even want to wear the abaya."

Another tweet said, "Dear sister, why try things that will anger God?"

One post said, "Our poor women have become cheap commodities. Every secular, Western trend is sent their way. Clothes, fashion, showing off. Dear sister: God granted you the gift of hijab and religion. He made you a queen and a protected jewel. So why try things that will anger God?"

Others hit back and argued against the ludicrous nature of such a debate.

"No, don't wear a jacket. Stay in an abaya and freeze to death or get a cold. And as for us, it's fine, we can wear jackets and pullovers. For God's sake, is this the rhetoric of sane human beings?" "Are you even serious with this hashtag?

"Girls, please don't wear jackets, because they said so."

"Is this the only issue you debate every winter?"

“Why is this even still up for debate anyways?”

And "what's so wrong with wearing a jacket with an abaya?"

"Wear what you want, it doesn't matter what people think"

"Practice your personal freedom, may those who stand against it go to the North Pole"
