Some things just happen by chance. And it was by chance that we came across this gem of a place in the middle of nowhere. Llandudno, Wales is not quite the place you think of when you are thinking of currying excellence.

Let’s be honest the seaside resort is a pain to get too (motorway and that infuriating long ‘A’ road) but once there, you soon realise why it is such a popular spot for short breaks. The resort does have its scenic charms.

The Flames Takeaway offers a range of dishes ranging from chicken tikka kebabs to the traditional Indian curry.

We went for the Chicken Tikka Tandoori and Lamb Rogan Josh on our visit. Both came with fresh naans and you sensed the chef here actually cared about the stuff he served.

I feel residing in places of high Asian populations means we have become spoilt for choice when it comes to takeaway food. And I’m sorry to say some takeaway owners have let standards slip way below what we expect.

Here, in Llandudno though, they were doing things the old way. Cooking dishes with a little care and making sure customers went home happy.

It was a far cry from what one normally finds in seaside resorts.

The curry dish was far better than I have tasted in major restaurants in the region and kebab was in a league of its own.

And they were pretty big portions too and was complimented with some great sauces.
I later found out that the owners were from a great place – Nelson, Lancashire – which kind of explained why the curries were so well made.

Not sure we could get a home delivery from here…but it is worth a try!

Oh by the way check their website (the-flames.co.uk) out too…pretty impressive.
