From making snide remarks to shaming you in public for some the mother-in-law is out to make their lives hell.

A survey on the Ask Women board on reddit.com asked readers about the craziest thing their mother-in-law have ever said to them...we speak to some women who simply had enough.

Khadija says she had problems from the very beginning, “My mother-in-law is so difficult. She is always taunting me, making snide remarks. Only the other day she said to, ‘Only women who are good daughter-in-laws are blessed with sons.

“I have 3 daughters.”

Najma says her saas had a habit of going through her bags, “My father-in-law is really quiet. He barely utters a word. But my saas, she’s a tyrant.

"She keeps reminding me how I should be grateful that they accepted me as a bride, given that my parents are not as wealthy as them.

“The last time I went to visit my parents, I caught my mother-in-law going through my bag. I asked her what she was looking for. She said, ‘I want to make sure you are not stealing any of my jewellery to give to your mother.’ Just like that. She was so unashamed about it. I was disgusted".

Samina says she her mother-in-law had issues with her weight, “My mother-in-law started being mean to me after my baby was born.

“I know I had gained weight, but she would keep making nasty comments about it.

“One day at a daavat where loads of family friends were present, I took a chicken leg and put it on my plate. In front of everyone, my mother-in-law grabbed the chicken leg and put it back in the serving dish.

“Then she said, ‘Bohot khaliya, motee’ (You’ve eaten enough, you fatty).

“I started crying. Even the guests were embarrassed.”

Tehmina reveals she had only been married a short time before she was told in no uncertain terms what her life would be like, “My mother-in-law lives in a world where men are superior. I have only been married 6 months. I live with my in-laws.

“Every night when we have dinner, she will only let me take meat or chicken after my husband, his brother and the dad have taken their share. I have never known anything like this.”

Seema said, “I didn’t think my mother-in-law was a big problem until my kids were born. When my son was born, she told my husband to give me gold as a gift.

“However, when my daughter was born 2 years later, she told my husband that I didn’t warrant a gift because I had only given birth to a girl.

“In this day and age, I can’t believe this sort of nonsense occurs.”

One reader who asked to remain anonymous relayed her story of her mother-in-law. “My mother-in-law is alright in general. But when I was pregnant, she would give me all these weird anecdotes to deal with the various symptoms.

“The weirdest one was her cure for stretch marks.

“She told me to take one of my husband’s worn underwear.

“Worn underwear!

“During my shower I was supposed to rub the inside of it over my stretch marks.

“Then she said I should finish my shower. She also said I should never mention what I had done to my husband.

“I never did it, but when I told my mum, even she didn’t believe me!”
