‘At least they got the wedding out of the way in the first episode’ said my dad when he watched the Desi Rascals last week.

Launched with a great deal of razamatazz on Sky Living ‘Desi Rascals’ may not be everyone’s cup of tea. But then again I would sense it was not meant to be.

And whilst I was little apprehensive myself in the first episode I am actually quite intrigued and curious as what today’s episode holds in store.

During the opening episode I have to say I felt the older characters seemed to me more ‘normal’ than the younger ones I was supposed to relate too.

The good-looking twenty-somethings seemed to be everything I was not. The parents, who we normally see as the ogres trying to ruin our lives at almost every turn, were the ones I wanted to see more of.

They seemed like typical Asian parents who were going out of their way to make their children happy. One couldn’t help but feel a little emotional as both dads Jay and Shreekant stepped up to speak at the wedding. And I’m not even a dad!

And it was Manoj who stole the show in the second episode with his match-making. He was genuinely worried that his daughters Natalie and Jo might not be able to find the suitable partners for themselves.

I have to say watching him try to be ‘friends’ with a prospective son-in-law on a golf course was great TV.

Thankfully, you can’t escape the cultural baggage some of the characters must carry.

Yes, I have friends who looked like those bodybuilders but that was where the similarity ended.

Then again maybe I wasn’t meant to relate to anyone. Maybe my ‘normality’ isn’t the standard-bearer for the rest of the Asians on the planet?

Owais makes us cringe at every opportunity and Yasmin seems far too happy for someone who has to witness Shmoyels smile.

Regardless, I do think that the programme is probably doing far more for making us all look little more ‘normal’. Without even knowing it.

Desi Rascals continues tonight from 8pm on Sky Living.
