Oriental design is on Zouk’s menu

The owners of an Asian restaurant have released images to illustrate their ambitious £3million expansion plans.

The Zouk tea bar and grill, in Leeds Road, Bradford, plans to extend its operations by transforming the derelict pub next door into a three-storey building.

The criss-cross design for the frontage of the proposed building is based on the style of the Bird’s Nest stadium, in Beijing, China, and is designed to create a gateway feature to greet people travelling into Bradford.

The building would comprise an extension to the existing restaurant, training facilities for would-be chefs, space for private functions and a rooftop garden with bar.

Zouk said it had bought the building that once housed the High Flyer pub and had applied for planning permission to transform the site.

Tayub Amjad, who runs Zouk with his brother Mudassar, said: “We want to make a new building that will be a gateway from Leeds into Bradford.

“We want the design to be very eye-catching and for it to become iconic and something for the whole BD3 area to be proud of.

“We used an architect to do the drawings, but the actual design was done by me and my brother. It’s what we have seen on the Bird’s Nest in China at the Olympic Games and also on the design of the Gherkin in London.

“We wanted something with a similar striking look rather than just a boring glass frontage.

“It’s a derelict pub that has been closed for a number of years that we have purchased. We want to put a new building there. We submitted the plans in February and are waiting to hear from the Council.”

As part of the development, an area will be created where trainee chefs can watch the restaurant's fully-qualified chefs in action.

Mr Amjad said the £3m investment was proof of his family’ strong belief in the future of Bradford.

The news follows the launch of Zouk’s £1m restaurant in Manchester.

Tell you what, its better than a derelict pub.

Any investment to make Bradford better is good in my books. A different / more subtle colour to the silver would be nicer though.

I think it looks really good. And while I commend the owners in such a daring (and no doubt expensive) undertaking I can't help feel their efforts may be somewhat diluted by the generaly grotty state of the rest of the area. Still, I wish them luck and just hope that other proprietors in the area raise their game in response (I won't hold my breath though).

It doesn't really look like the birds nest stadium though - it just looks like giant MDF crosses on the front of a glass building! No very pretty.

Very happy however that they are expanding
